The story of the frame

The frame is a construction that essentially encloses an image, in order to enhance its content, to highlight it but also to protect it from damage.

Its most common shape is square or rectangular in general, but in recent years there has been a trend for different and sophisticated designs. The frame, therefore, plays a functional role and therefore it is essential to highlight the image itself as best as possible, and this is achieved when the correct size has been placed.

This was true from the very first frames, which as architectural and artistic interventions, framed and enriched the image, literally and figuratively, of those who had the financial ability and the corresponding requirements. They used frames made of precious stones, metals and wood to give more emphasis and we can say that they functioned as a divider between the decoration and the image.

Later, their aesthetic value was recognized and they acquired artistic dynamics, going beyond the decorative limit and ending up in a more symbolic role. Thus, they gradually began to pay more attention to processing techniques, which led to the revolution in the production and installation of the frame, through successive interventions.

To get to today, we had to mediate the Renaissance period, where in general anything artistic, and consequently the frames, ceased to be considered an object of luxury. Art was now accessible to all, the beauty of simplicity came to the fore and artistic development flourished. This, made the frame part of the work, which transforms it and colors it additionally, giving special senses.
